The Mountain Empire Amateur Radio Society also known as M.E.A.R.S., is a non profit HAM radio club in South Western Virginia for the use of teaching amateur radio users proper usage and allow members to learn how to obtain their HAM licenses. Yes we also conduct HAM license testing, be it Technical, General or Extra we can help. Let us not forget GMRS, (General Mobile Radio Service) and FRS, (Family Radio Service) as well.

At M.E.A.R.S., we are dedicated to teaching and training individuals in the proper usage of HAM radio. Whether you are a beginner or looking to enhance your skills, we are here to help you succeed. You must not have a license to become a member. "Come to a meeting and meet some great amateur operators"

We meet each third Thursday of the month at 7:00 - PM  at either of the following locations as we alternate:

M.E.A.R.S. North at 239 Autumn Lane. Marion Virginia 24354, (Interstate Campground) or at

M.E.A.R.S. South at JMH Hospital 16000, Johnston Memorial Drive, Abingdon, Virginia 24211, (2nd floor).

National Weather Service SKYWARN Update

The National Weather Service and SKYWARN are no longer using Spotter Numbers. They are now only using individual names of ones that have attended their initial class. Also in October this year of 2025 they are offering an advanced class which they recommend we participate in. They recommend we visit their web site for date and time.

Learning Advanced Ham Radio 

Take your HAM radio skills to the next level with our great and most friendly members. Everyone is more than happy to assist you . It is so nice to have a wealth of knowledge to draw from.

 

Emergency Communication Preparedness

Be prepared for emergencies with our specialized communications in ethics and operations. We can advise and educate on your personalized needs and desires such as SKYWARN, MARS, RACES, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment do I need in the beginning?

For the beginner, just attend our meetings and feel your way around with our great fellow members. They can and will guide you through. We are here to help you in your desires to become a HAM operator. We meet every third Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM. MEARS North or MEARS South. Are there any prerequisites to join M.E.A.R.S.?

There are no prerequisites for joining our club, but some prior experience is beneficial. We together will walk with you. You are not alone with MEARS.

How can I get involved in emergency communication preparedness?

To get involved in emergency communication preparedness, contact us for upcoming meetings and events. We have a wealth of knowledge to draw from.

Must I have a HAM license to join M.E.A.R.S.?

The answer is, "No". You do not need a license of any kind to join M.E.A.R.S. We will assist you in getting your HAM or GMRS license.

Does M.E.A.R.S. have anything to do with GMRS?

Absolutely "YES", you can learn all about GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) at MEARS.

Can I be tested at M.E.A.R.S. for my HAM license?

"YES" We do perform testing. Study well and be prepared with the right stuff. We certainly have a VE, (Volunteer Examiner).

How much does the membership cost to join M.E.A.R.S.?

Membership is $20.00 a year. $10.00 for additional family members. Now is the time to join. Come to a meeting.
